ISLAND INFERNO

HOOK:   You and your classmates are on an island that is currently erupting with hot volcanic lava.  You have a limited amount of time to get to the other side of the island that is half the size of the island that you are on now.  The only way to get there is to cross alligator river.  the only way to get across is to swing on a vine.  If anyone falls into or touches the river then you must start the exercise over.  One last thing, three of your classmates have been burned around the eyes and cannot see.  Make sure that they make it across the river safely.

MATERIALS:

   3 MATS

   GYMNASIUM SPACE

   THREE BLIND FOLDS

  A ROPE

EQUIPMENT SET UP:

The rope must be suspended from the ceiling, a tree or a swing set.  One mat is placed five feet behind the point at which the rope hangs straight down. This first mat should also be opened all the way.  The second mat should be placed five feet in front of the rope at the point of where the rope hangs straight down. The second mat should be half the size of the first mat.  three of the students will have to blind folded before they see the set up.

ACTIVITY:

All of the students must start on the mat that is placed behind the rope.  None of them are allowed to fall off the mat at this point or they start the activity over.  They must then somehow pull the rope back to them and get everyone to the other mat which is half the size.  If anyone falls off the the rope onto the floor or falls off the other mat, then the activity starts all over again.  They have until the end of the period to complete this or they will start where they left off the next day.
